A Home, A Husband and A Father Awaiting Us: Things to Fix Our Eyes on This Valentine’s Day (and everyday)

What are the longings of every heart? What are the deepest longings of your own heart? A beautiful home to rest in, someone who cares and loves you deeply and a Father who has power over all things.

I have been taking a class on the book of Hebrews and this is what the writer of Hebrews turns the congregation towards in the midst of their potential apostasy: the New Jerusalem.

Baffled at that being what encourages the believers, I asked the Lord for revelation because I wasn’t really getting how a city can help one endure persecution.

The Lord answered and opened my eyes to the beauty of the New Jerusalem, the city that is to come.

“then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” -Revelation 21:2-5

Some theologians actually believe that the New Jerusalem will look like a giant diamond. How beautiful and fitting is that? Our Bridegroom Jesus who has left us for the time being to prepare a place for us to dwell with Him for all of eternity.

When the Lord gave me a vision of the New Jerusalem, similar to anything the Lord shows us, everything is alive and radiating with His glory. The city I saw wasn’t like any city I’ve seen on earth. Just looking at it brought tears to my eyes because I felt peace, joy and love all at the same time. I felt a sense of belonging and significance in the eyes of the Lord that He would prepare such a beautiful place like that for me.

At our wedding, Gary our officiant shared that when we have an eternal perspective, we’re more able to put up with the broken things of life here on earth for there is something so much more glorious we’re looking forward to.

Just imagine! No more pain, every tear wiped away, no more death, no more sorrow, no more crying and God dwelling with us in perfect untainted relationship.

Even in the time of worship where I’ve tasted only the smallest whisper of the glory of God, I am addicted to the peace, joy and love His presence brings to my heart. Imagine dwelling in uninterrupted time with the Lord for not just a few minutes, but for all of eternity! This is what every heart desires. Not chocolates, not diamonds, not houses and new cars even, but to be able to rest in the safety and the comfort of God’s presence for all of eternity.

Oh Abba, lift our eyes up to what is unseen, the eternal city. Give us revelation of what that looks like, give us grace to preserver and draw near You during times of difficulty. For we are looking forward to a city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. (Hebrews 11:10).
